JIF is delighted to announce the award in 2018 of bursaries to Harry Goring and Rory Lomas.
Harry Goring, Age 19
I have had a passion for agriculture from a very young age. Although I don’t have a farm at home I have grown up around farming and I began carting corn for my great uncle when I was 13. Since then I have worked for seven farm businesses and gained a lot of experience within the industry and I intend to continue to add to this.
I didn’t perform amazingly at school because I wasn’t particularly interested in the subjects. However, I was inspired to go to agricultural college, Easton and Otley college (Easton campus) where I thrived and it allowed me to progress to study a degree in Agriculture and Farm Management at the Royal Agricultural University. I intend to embark on a career in Farm Management.
Receiving the John Innes Foundation Bursary is incredible and it will create a lot of great opportunities that I am looking forward to exploring.
Rory Lomas
I grew up in rural Wiltshire amongst the rolling downloads of Salisbury Plain. I developed an interest in farming having heard of my grandfather’s exploits during the 1960s as a tea and coffee planter in Kenya. I have experience on mixed farms with a particular emphasis on cereal production; and now have a particular interest in conservation agriculture and soil structure.
Educated in Warminster, I am now studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture with Crop Management at Harper Adams University in Shropshire.
In my spare time, I like to keep active, being a keen sportsman who enjoys hockey, rugby and running.
